A fast way to decide
- When a fight starts, I want to…
- Get kills → Damage. Keep people alive → Support. Lead the charge → Tank.
- I get stressed when…
- I'm dying a lot → try Support first. Nobody follows my lead → try Damage. I can't see what is happening → try Damage.
- I want the fewest things to learn
- A Damage hero with one simple weapon and a couple of abilities.
DidIThrow advice
Whichever role you pick, learn one hero in it first. Then learn a second. That is a real start. See beginner-friendly heroes.
Common questions
Which Overwatch role is easiest for beginners?
Damage is the most familiar if you have played other shooters. Support is a comfortable second choice because healing helps even when your aim is not perfect.
Can I try all three roles?
Yes, and you should. Rotating through roles in Quick Play is the fastest way to learn what each one does.
