What matters most?

What each option does

Render scale
How sharp the image is drawn. Lowering it is the quickest way to gain FPS.
Texture quality
Sharpness of surfaces. Needs graphics memory, not much processing.
Shadow detail
Costs a fair amount of FPS. A good first thing to lower.
Effects detail
Explosions and abilities. Lower for busy fights.
Model detail
How detailed heroes look up close.
Dynamic reflections
Extra shine on surfaces. Purely visual, usually off for FPS.
Frame rate limit
Stops the game running faster than your monitor can show.
VSync
Removes screen tearing but adds delay. Usually off.
NVIDIA Reflex
Reduces delay between input and screen on NVIDIA GPUs.
DidIThrow advice

Do not compare FPS numbers with other people. Watch your own smoothness. If the game feels smooth, you are done.

Menu names can change with updates. If an option looks different in your game, use the closest match.

Common questions

What is the biggest lever for FPS?

Render scale. Lowering it reduces how hard the game works on your GPU.

Should I turn VSync on?

For competitive play, most people leave VSync off to reduce delay. If tearing bothers you on a 60Hz screen, turning it on is fine.

DirectX 11 or 12?

Blizzard defaults to DirectX 11 on PC. If your Video menu shows a choice, start with the default and only try the other if you have problems.
